Background

During migration form AEM on-prem to AEMaaCS there was a requirement to migrate from CIF Classic to AEM CIF. AdditionallY, client migrated to new version of PIM system and changed their products structure.

Challenge

In initial implementation, CIF Classic was used together with a custom API that was an overlay for PIM system API. CIF Classic enforced authors to do manual imports of products to AEM and then rollout the changes to pages, which was very time consuming. As part of the project, we had to change from custom API to direct integration with PIM API. In parallel client had internal project of changing the products structure.

Solution

CIF Classic was replaced with AEM CIF that allowed us to change the approach for Product Detail Pages and Product Listing Pages – instead of tedious import and rollout process, PDPs and PLPs are generated automatically based on the prepared template – PIM API is asked in real time each time PDP or PLP needs to be rendered. Content authors gained time they can spend on other tasks instead importing products and rolling out changes. We also changed source of product data by using directly PIM with new structure of product information instead of custom API, so client doesn’t have to bother with maintaining separate API.

FAQ

What is PIM in AEM?

Adobe Experience Manager (AEM) is a content management system which helps you to deliver, control, present and reuse content across online channels. It gives your team a comprehensive range of tools and solutions for providing outstanding user experience. This is why there is no dedicated AEM.

PIM solution this CMS gives possibilities to enable powerful integration with almost any PIM system.

For seamless integration AEM developed Commerce Integration Framework. It’s a toolkit and APIs which enable integration between Adobe Experience Manager and various commerce systems. CIF helps you in managing and using the data from the PIM by using product catalogs, product pages, and shopping carts on an AEM website.

What is PIM in AEM cloud?

Adobe Experience Manager (AEM) as a Cloud Service is a cloud-based version of AEM which is hosted on Adobe’s cloud platform. This solution offers the same features as AEM on premises and some additional benefits. Using AEM as a Cloud Service means you are always working with the latest version of the CMS (including latest security level). Moreover, the solution provides additional advantages such as automated scaling and lower cost of ownership.

Despite the lack of a built-in AEM Product Information Management solution there is a possibility to integrate AEM and PIM. It can be done with Adobe Commerce Integration Framework (CIF) Cloud which integrates AEM with PIM, based on standardized APIs and Experience Data Model (XDM) compatible data.

After successful AEM PIM integration features offered by CIF are available. Commerce information and data can be used on different online channels and presented to multiple users.

Does Adobe have a PIM solution?

Adobe offers Adobe Commerce Cloud (formerly Magento Commerce). It’s a cloud-based, open-source e-commerce platform that offers, among other things, a PIM solution. PIM in Adobe Commerce Cloud allows you to manage and maintain all product information, such as descriptions, images, pricing, and inventory levels, in one place. Moreover, Adobe Commerce Cloud helps run your e-commerce business by providing features like storefront design and customization, order management, or customer management. For Adobe Commerce Cloud, AEM PIM Integration can be implemented.

What is the difference between CMS and PIM?

CMS stands for Content Management System. CMS helps users manage website content. In CMS, you can create, edit, and publish web pages, blog posts, or screens. Adobe Experience Manager is an example of a popular CMS. This comprehensive solution allows for managing user properties and personalizing experiences across online channels.

PIM is product information management. As a CMS it’s a system designed to manage content, but PIM is dedicated to storage, organizing, and updating product information. In PIM users can manage specific product information (e.g., descriptions, specifications, images, prices), set up product catalogs, and send product data to sales channels, marketing, or supplier. As all product data are stored in one place, it helps keep consistency across different channels.

If you are using both systems, AEM PIM Integration would be a milestone for your company. It improves efficiency as you avoid duplication of effort and saves time.

What is PIM vs DAM?

PIM stands for product information management. PIM system is dedicated to managing, maintaining, and updating all information regarding products needed for marketing and sale purposes. The PIM system allows us to keep all data from different internal and external data sources (e.g., EPR). Thanks to that, you can easily standardize and optimize all product information from technical details (e.g., dimensions, materials) to marketing materials (e.g., product photos, prices, discounts).

DAM is a digital asset management system. DAM allows you to import and manage digital assets such as images, videos, documents, and audio files. These materials’ library helps to handle, share and use the assets across different digital channels.

AEM PIM Integration allows you to use the advantages of both PIM and DAM in one system. It also brings savings to your company as you prevent asset duplication and manage digital rights in one place.
